How Japanese looks on the page
- Script
- Three scripts used together — kanji, hiragana and katakana — usually with no spaces between words.
- Numbers
- 0–9 in most writing; kanji numerals in formal or vertical text.
- Names
- In Japanese text, family name comes first, then the given name.
Writing to Japanese readers
- Saying "you"
- Japanese has Japanese usually avoids "you"; politeness is built into verb forms (keigo). Check the tone when you write to an elder, a client or an officer.
- Sentence order
- English puts the verb after the subject and Japanese puts the verb at the end, so sentences are rebuilt, not swapped word for word.
- Mixed words
- Many English loan words are written in katakana (meeting = ミーティング).
- Who reads it
- Japanese is spoken in Japan.
