How French looks on the page
- Script
- Latin alphabet with accents (é, è, ç).
- Numbers
- 0–9 with a comma for decimals and a space between thousands (1 000,50).
- Names
- In French text, names can carry particles (de, du) and hyphens (Jean-Pierre).
Writing to French readers
- Saying "you"
- French has tu (familiar) and vous (formal or plural). Check the tone when you write to an elder, a client or an officer.
- Sentence order
- English and French both put the verb after the subject, so most sentences keep their shape; idioms still need rewording.
- Mixed words
- French in North and West Africa often mixes with Arabic, Wolof or English.
- Who reads it
- French is spoken in France, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland and much of West and North Africa.
