How Arabic looks on the page
- Script
- Arabic script, written right to left, letters joined; short vowels usually not written — copy it into an app that supports right-to-left text.
- Numbers
- Gulf countries often use Eastern Arabic digits (١, ٢, ٣); North Africa uses 0–9.
- Names
- In Arabic text, names often include "bin" or "ibn" (son of) and a family name.
Writing to Arabic readers
- Saying "you"
- Arabic has anta (to a man), anti (to a woman) and antum (plural); formal Arabic is used in writing. Check the tone when you write to an elder, a client or an officer.
- Sentence order
- English puts the verb after the subject and Arabic often starts with the verb, so sentences are rebuilt, not swapped word for word.
- Mixed words
- Gulf speech mixes in English and, in workplaces, Hindi and Urdu words.
- Who reads it
- Arabic is spoken across the Middle East and North Africa, including the Gulf where many Indian workers live.
Example
You paste (English):
Work starts at 6 am tomorrow because of the heat. The bus will pick you up at 5:15.
You read (Arabic):
يبدأ العمل في الساعة 6 صباحاً غداً بسبب الحرارة. ستقلك الحافلة في تمام الساعة 5:15.
