Reading the German you paste
- Script
- Latin alphabet with umlauts (ä, ö, ü) and ß; every noun starts with a capital letter, and long compound nouns are common (Krankenversicherung, health insurance).
- Numbers
- 0–9 with a comma for decimals and a point between thousands (1.000,50).
- Mixed text
- Business German uses many English words (Meeting, Deadline).
- Names
- Umlauts in names are often written ae, oe, ue in English (Müller / Mueller).
From German to English
- Politeness
- German has du (familiar) and Sie (formal, always capitalised); English has a single "you", so the translation carries politeness with words like "please", "sir" or "ma'am".
- Sentence order
- German puts the verb second in a main clause, sends it to the end of a subordinate clause, and splits separable verbs (ruft … an), so sentences are rebuilt rather than swapped word for word.
- Where it comes from
- German is spoken in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Example
You paste (German):

Questions
Is the German to English translator free?
Yes — up to 5,000 characters, 5 times a day, no sign-up.
Are names, dates and amounts kept?
The translator keeps names and figures as they are, but machine translation can slip — check dates and amounts against the original before you send.
Will a polite German message stay polite in English?
It aims to: English has no separate polite "you", so the respect shows in the wording instead. Read it once before you send something important.
Does it handle German typed quickly on a phone?
Yes. Short forms and missing letters or marks (for example ae for ä) are still translated as a whole into English; unclear words are worth a second look.
