    Listening to German

    How it sounds
Swiss and Austrian German sound quite different from German in Germany.
    Mixed speech
Business German uses many English words (Meeting, Deadline) — the transcript keeps it as it was said before it is translated.
    Sentence order
German puts the verb second in a main clause, sends it to the end of a subordinate clause, and splits separable verbs (ruft … an), so sentences are rebuilt rather than swapped word for word.
    Where it is spoken
German is spoken in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

    What changes in English

    Politeness
German has du (familiar) and Sie (formal, always capitalised); in English it becomes "you", with the respect carried by the wording.
    Numbers
Numbers said in German come out as figures (0–9) in the English.

    Example

    What was said (German):

Der Flug hat zwei Stunden Verspätung. Wir boarden nun um 21 Uhr an Gate 12.

    You read (English):

The flight is delayed by two hours. We are now boarding at 9 PM at Gate 12.

    Questions

Is translating German audio to English free?

Yes — clips up to 3 minutes and 25 MB, 3 times a day, no sign-up.

Will it follow a German speaker with a strong accent?

Clear audio with one speaker at a time works best. Strong regional accents and background noise can cause mistakes, so check names and numbers against the recording.

Do I get the German transcript too?

Yes — what was said in German first, then the English.
