How German looks on the page

    Script
Latin alphabet with umlauts (ä, ö, ü) and ß; every noun starts with a capital letter, and long compound nouns are common (Krankenversicherung, health insurance).
    Numbers
0–9 with a comma for decimals and a point between thousands (1.000,50).
    Names
In German text, umlauts in names are often written ae, oe, ue in English (Müller / Mueller).

    Writing to German readers

    Saying "you"
German has du (familiar) and Sie (formal, always capitalised). Check the tone when you write to an elder, a client or an officer.
    Sentence order
German puts the verb second in a main clause, sends it to the end of a subordinate clause, and splits separable verbs (ruft … an), so sentences are rebuilt rather than swapped word for word.
    Mixed words
Business German uses many English words (Meeting, Deadline).
    Who reads it
German is spoken in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

    Example

    You paste (English):

Please find attached the invoice for September. Payment is due within 30 days.

    You read (German):

Im Anhang finden Sie die Rechnung für September. Die Zahlung ist innerhalb von 30 Tagen fällig.

    Questions

Is the English to German translator free?

    Yes — up to 5,000 characters, 5 times a day, no sign-up.

Are names, dates and amounts kept?

The translator keeps names and figures as they are, but machine translation can slip — check dates and amounts against the original before you send.

Which "you" will the German use?

The one that fits the tone of what you paste — a respectful message stays respectful for a German reader.

How much English can I paste?

Up to 5,000 characters at a time — about two pages of an email or a notice. For more, split it or sign up free to keep longer translations as notes.
