How Tamil looks on the page
- Script
- Tamil script, written left to right, with fewer letters than most Indian scripts — one letter can stand for several sounds.
- Numbers
- Tamil digits exist, but are rare; 0–9 is used almost everywhere.
- Names
- In Tamil text, names often carry an initial for the father's name (K. Ramesh) instead of a surname.
Writing to Tamil readers
- Saying "you"
- Tamil has neenga / neengal (respectful or plural) and nee (familiar). Check the tone when you write to an elder, a client or an officer.
- Sentence order
- English puts the verb after the subject and Tamil puts the verb at the end, so sentences are rebuilt, not swapped word for word.
- Mixed words
- Tanglish — English words in Tamil speech, very common in offices and colleges.
- Who reads it
- Tamil is spoken in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia.
Example
You paste (English):
The school will remain closed on Monday because of the local election. Classes will resume on Tuesday.
You read (Tamil):
உள்ளாட்சித் தேர்தல் காரணமாக திங்கட்கிழமை அன்று பள்ளிக்கு விடுமுறை அளிக்கப்படுகிறது. செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை முதல் வகுப்புகள் வழக்கம்போல் நடைபெறும்.
