Why Russian challenges ordinary transcription

Russian is a heavily inflected Slavic language written in Cyrillic, with six grammatical cases, a soft/hard consonant distinction, and unpredictable stress that triggers strong vowel reduction. Those features make it hard for tools that assume regular, English-like phonetics.

Russian packs grammar into endings: nouns and adjectives change form across six cases, so the same word appears in many shapes.
