    Listening to Portuguese

    How it sounds
Brazilian and European Portuguese sound very different; European Portuguese drops many vowels.
    Mixed speech
Brazilian speech borrows English words in tech and business — the transcript keeps it as it was said before it is translated.
    Sentence order
Portuguese and English both put the verb after the subject, so most sentences keep their shape; idioms still need rewording.
    Where it is spoken
Portuguese is spoken in Brazil, Portugal, Angola and Mozambique.

    What changes in English

    Politeness
Portuguese has você (common in Brazil), tu (common in Portugal) and o senhor / a senhora (formal); in English it becomes "you", with the respect carried by the wording.
    Numbers
Numbers said in Portuguese come out as figures (0–9) in the English.

    Example

    What was said (Portuguese):

O voo está atrasado em duas horas. Agora vamos embarcar no portão 12 às 21h.

    You read (English):

The flight is delayed by two hours. Now we are going to board at gate 12 at 21:00.

    Questions

Is translating Portuguese audio to English free?

Yes — clips up to 3 minutes and 25 MB, 3 times a day, no sign-up.

Will it follow a Portuguese speaker with a strong accent?

Clear audio with one speaker at a time works best. Strong regional accents and background noise can cause mistakes, so check names and numbers against the recording.

Do I get the Portuguese transcript too?

Yes — what was said in Portuguese first, then the English.
